Empathy

One of the great fallacies of mankind is as follows..

  • When one sees someone else in a way that would make themselves uncomfortable, they assume the other person is uncomfortable.. or possibly crazy. This is of course wrong. There are differing physiologies. We know sensitivity to cold or hot has to do with environment as feral children are perfectly comfortable outside stark naked.
  • When one is in a foreign land and they see someone doing something that in their land would be rude (or even immoral!), they assume that this person is doing something that they, themselves see wrong in and should know better. We know, now about a thing called cultural relativism.
  • Many people scoff at the idea that people can be color blind.
  • Some people think that homosexuals are just being that way to get attention, even though it’s surely unlikely that so many people would choose to be marginalized so.

I think you get the point. That which creates the above situations and others is one of the great fallacies of mankind. But, is this not what empathy is based on? The imagination we have inside to inform us of others’ feelings.. Maybe we just need a wilder imagination!
